Langarica Canyon
Langarica Canyon
Near Përmet, Langarica Canyon combines 4.5 km of limestone gorges, 150-meter cliffs and the Bënjë thermal springs in southern Albania.
In southern Albania, a few kilometers from the town of Përmet, Langarica Canyon cuts through the limestone massif of Bredhi i Hotovës-Dangëlli national park. Carved by the Langarica River, it combines narrow gorges, vertical cliffs and nearby thermal springs, in a valley still less frequented compared to the Albanian coast.
Why visit Langarica Canyon
The canyon offers a concentrated display of rare karst landscapes in the region: walls sculpted by water, natural pools and confined passages where the river winds between stone walls. Its immediate proximity to the Bënjë thermal baths makes it possible to combine hiking and swimming in a single day, making it a convenient stop for travelers based in Përmet.
The area remains accessible to hikers without technical experience, while also offering more challenging canyoning routes for those who want to descend the river from within.
What to see and do
Geology and landscapes
The Langarica River winds for approximately 4.5 km through the canyon, with walls reaching up to 30 meters in the most constricted passages and cliffs reaching 150 meters above the riverbed. The underlying rock combines Upper Triassic dolomites and neritic limestones from the Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous, a layering that explains the verticality of the walls and the formation of the gorges.
Hiking
Several trails follow the river from the Ottoman bridge at Kati, the most common entry point. The routes alternate between dry passages and water crossings depending on the season. Wildlife includes raptors and marmots, best observed early in the morning.
Canyoning
The canyoning course is rated level 2 out of 5, accessible to beginners in good physical condition. It combines walking, swimming, jumping and a few rappels, guided by local guides. Equipment (wetsuit, helmet, life jacket) is generally provided by operators.
Bënjë thermal springs
At the entrance to the canyon, the Bënjë thermal springs flow into stone pools, immediately adjacent to the Ottoman bridge. The sulfurous water, around 25-30 °C, allows for swimming after the hike. The site is free and open access, but can be crowded during peak season.
When to visit
The most favorable period runs from May to October. In spring, the river flow remains strong and temperatures are mild; in summer, water levels drop and pools become more accessible for swimming. Autumn offers interesting light for photography. In winter, floods and cold make canyoning impractical, but outdoor hiking remains possible in dry weather.
