Everything you need to know about Kosovo

Our local experts share their knowledge to prepare your trip.

When to visit Kosovo?

Kosovo experiences a continental climate with distinct seasons: cold, snowy winters in the Bjeshkët e Nemuna and Sharr mountain ranges, and hot, dry summers in the Dukagjin plain around Pejë and Gjakovë. The most pleasant window to visit Kosovo runs from late April to early October. May and June offer still-green valleys, ideal for hiking on the Peaks of the Balkans. September remains our preferred season: soft light, bustling markets in Prizren, and grape harvests in the Rahovec region. Winter attracts skiing enthusiasts to Brezovica or snow-covered villages around Junik. Only avoid August, sometimes stifling in the city, and the first days of January when many restaurants close.

What budget should you plan for a trip to Kosovo?

Kosovo remains one of Europe's most affordable destinations. A hearty meal in a restored kulla in Junik or a guesthouse in Prizren costs around 10 to 15 euros, while a coffee on a Pristina terrace rarely exceeds one euro. For a tailor-made Kosovo trip, expect an average of 110 to 160 euros per day and per person, including character accommodation, English-speaking guide, private transfers and site entrance fees. The budget increases if you add a dedicated driver for the entire journey, nights in mountain lodges in Rugova, or an extension to North Macedonia and Albania. Flights from Paris or Geneva to Pristina remain affordable year-round.

Why organize your trip with a local agency in Kosovo?

Kosovo reads in nuances. Behind each valley lies a family story, a displaced border, a language passed down from one generation to the next. Traveling through a local agency in Kosovo like Breathe in Travel, based in Pristina since 2016, transforms the nature of your journey: our English-speaking guides also speak Albanian and Serbian, opening doors that few visitors ever cross — an Orthodox monastery in Deçan, a family home in Velika Hoča, a filigree workshop in Prizren. We tailor each itinerary to your pace, your interests, and the season. And because Breathe in Travel is a member of Nomadays, your booking is secured in France while remaining managed on the ground.

What to see on a Kosovo tour?

A good Kosovo itinerary unfolds around four key stops. First comes Pristina, a young and vibrant capital where you'll stroll between the national library, the bazaar, and the cafés of the Pejton district. Then Prizren, the country's most beautiful city, dominated by its fortress and crossed by the Bistrica river, particularly lively during the Dokufest festival in August. Further west, Pejë opens onto the Rugova national park and its Orthodox patriarchate, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll often finish with the villages of Drenica or the vineyards of Rahovec, before heading, time permitting, to Lake Mirusha and its waterfalls. Seven to ten days are enough to truly grasp the country.
