Gračanica is a town in central Kosovo, roughly fifteen kilometres southeast of Pristina. It is known primarily for its 14th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, whose Byzantine domes dominate the Kosovo Polje plain. The town is home to a significant Kosovo Serbian community and serves as a transit point between the capital and the south of the country.

What to See
Gračanica Monastery is the heart of the visit. Its main church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, features refined Byzantine architecture: five nested domes, façades alternating stone and brick, and an interior entirely covered with medieval frescoes. These paintings, dating to the reign of King Stefan Milutin, rank among the Balkans' best-preserved examples.
Around the monastery, an enclosure wall delimits a peaceful courtyard with gardens and convent buildings still inhabited by nuns. The town itself offers a few cafés and local markets without particular tourist pretension.
History and Context
The monastery was founded around 1321 by Serbian King Stefan Milutin on the ruins of an earlier paleo-Christian church. It quickly became a major religious and cultural centre of medieval Serbia. After the Battle of Kosovo Polje (1389), it remained a symbol of Serbian cultural resistance under Ottoman rule.
