A summit in southern Albania close to Përmet, Mount Kokojka offers hiking, pristine wildlife and access to the pastoral villages of the Vjosa valley.

Mount Kokojka rises in southern Albania, near the town of Përmet, in the Gjirokastër region. This summit belongs to the Trebechinë, Dhembel and Nemërçkë massif, which marks the border between Albania and Greece. Rarely visited, it attracts independent hikers and lovers of unspoiled nature.

Why visit Mount Kokojka

Kokojka offers mountainous terrain still off the beaten path. Pine and oak forests, alpine meadows, discreet wildlife: the area retains a wild character rare in southern Europe. It is also a gateway to a valley rich in heritage — stone villages, ancient Orthodox churches, thermal baths — which extends the experience beyond hiking alone.

The Nemërçkë massif to which Kokojka is attached peaks at over 1,500 metres, and the ridges open broad panoramas over the valleys of southern Albania. The region remains largely unmarked, making it suitable terrain for experienced hikers or those accompanied by a guide.

History and pastoral culture

Like many Albanian massifs, Kokojka long served as a refuge. According to local oral tradition, the region is said to have harboured communities of resistance fighters during Ottoman occupation, who exploited the rugged terrain to escape imperial authorities.

The mountain is primarily linked to Albanian pastoral tradition. Transhumance is still practised here: shepherds and herds of sheep and goats climb to high-altitude pastures during the fair season. This activity has shaped the trails, shepherds' huts and organisation of villages in the neighbouring valleys, where living traces of this way of life can be found.

What to see and do

Hiking and wildlife observation

Kokojka trails cross forests, meadows and rocky areas. The sector is home to diverse wildlife: golden eagles, various raptors, red foxes. The presence of the Balkan lynx, an extremely rare species, is documented across the southern Albanian massif, though sightings are not expected. The silence and low visitor numbers make bird watching particularly rewarding.

Villages and heritage

Several villages frame the mountain:

  • Përmet, nicknamed "the city of roses", renowned for its hospitality, gastronomy and raki, a local spirit.
  • Benjë, famous for its natural thermal baths on the banks of the Lengarica river.
  • Leusa, whose Orthodox church houses remarkable ancient frescoes.

Winter activities

In winter, the massif lends itself to ski touring and snowshoeing for independent practitioners. This is not a developed resort: no lifts, no marked trails, and logistics must be organised from Përmet.

When to visit

Mount Kokojka is best visited from May to October. Spring offers blooming meadows and well-fed watercourses, summer allows access to the ridges in good conditions, and autumn brings striking colours to the oak forests. Winter blankets the massif with snow: stunning for prepared ski tourers, but barely passable otherwise, with access roads sometimes cut off.

Practical advice

  • Level: experienced hiker. Trails are unmarked and topographic landmarks can be limited.
  • Guide: recommended, especially for ridge itineraries or off-season visits. Companions can be found from Përmet.
  • Equipment: mountain boots, GPS or topographic map, windproof clothing, plenty of water (few resupply points at altitude).
  • Accommodation: guesthouses in Përmet and neighbouring villages, in simple to mid-range categories.
  • Respect for the environment: no fires, take all rubbish with you, keep distance from herds and sheepdogs.

How to get there

From Tirana, allow roughly 4 hours of driving via the SH4, passing through Fier, Tepelenë then Përmet. A rental car remains the most flexible option; a vehicle with slightly higher clearance is useful for secondary tracks, particularly after heavy rain.

By public transport, buses and minibuses connect Tirana to Përmet daily in 4 to 5 hours, with variable schedules. From Përmet, access to the trails is by taxi, car or with a local guide. A few agencies also offer organised excursions including transport and guidance.
