An Ottoman fortress built in 1537, located 3-4 km from Saranda, Lëkurësi Castle offers sweeping views over the Ionian Sea, Corfu, and Lake Butrint. Free entry.

Perched on a hillside 3-4 km from the centre of Saranda, Lëkurësi Castle has dominated the Albanian Ionian coast since the 16th century. This partially ruined Ottoman fortress commands an expansive panorama over the city, the island of Corfu, Lake Butrint, and the Ionian Sea. Access to the site is free and unrestricted.

Why visit Lëkurësi Castle

The castle stands out for its strategic position: built on elevated ground, it once controlled the route between Saranda and Butrint as well as the harbour entrance. Today, this same vantage point defines its appeal as a destination. The view encompasses the entire bay, and the site layers multiple historical periods: Ottoman walls, remnants of a medieval village, 20th-century artillery pieces, and Cold War bunkers. It ranks among Saranda's most accessible attractions, with no entrance fee and a walkable route.

History of the castle

Lëkurësi Castle was built in 1537 under Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Its primary function was defensive: to protect the region from Venetian threats and to monitor the route connecting Saranda to Butrint, as well as movements in the harbour, which was vital to local commerce.

In the 18th century, the fortress was attacked by Ali Pasha of Tepelena, a major figure in Albanian and Ottoman history of that era. Weakened by conflicts and gradually losing its military significance, the castle was definitively abandoned in 1878. The bunkers and artillery pieces visible on site bear witness to more recent uses of the promontory, particularly during the communist period.

What to see on site

The site is open for free exploration and can be walked around in 45 minutes to an hour, including time for photos. Several elements deserve attention:

  • The limestone walls, reaching up to 7 metres in height in places.
  • Two round towers, positioned diagonally, characteristic of Ottoman defensive architecture.
  • Remnants of the former village of Lëkurës, visible behind the fortress, a reminder that the site was inhabited beyond its purely military function.
  • 20th-century artillery pieces and Cold War bunkers, scattered around the fortress.
  • The panorama from the ramparts, spanning Saranda, the island of Corfu, Lake Butrint, and the Ionian Sea.

A restaurant operates directly on the site, with another located on the access path. Both offer the chance to pause for a meal with a view, though exploring the ruins themselves requires no expenditure.

Practical information

Access to the castle is free and the site is open for unrestricted visits. Allow around 1 hour to explore the ruins; longer if you plan to dine on site. Wear sturdy shoes: the terrain is uneven and some sections involve steep gradients.

The site is not specifically adapted for people with reduced mobility. Water, a hat, and sun protection are recommended during summer, as the promontory offers little shade.

When to visit

Late afternoon, ahead of sunset, offers the finest light over the bay. Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) remain the most comfortable periods: moderate temperatures and reasonable visitor numbers. In the height of summer, avoid midday when the site is most exposed.

How to get there

The castle is located 3-4 km from central Saranda. Several options are available:

  • On foot: from the centre of Saranda, allow 45 minutes to 1 hour of uphill walking. The route offers progressive views over the bay.
  • By car or taxi: the paved road is in good condition and parking is available near the site. Taxis from Saranda are reasonably priced.
  • On an organised excursion: several circuits combine the castle with other sites in the region, including Butrint.
