Dhermi
White pebbles, turquoise waters and an ancient settlement perched 200 metres above the sea: Dhermi is one of the most stunning stops along Albania's Riviera.
Dhermi, a charming little seaside resort halfway between Vlorë and Saranda on the Ionian coast, is a captivating stop for a beachside getaway in Albanie. Its spectacular beaches—among the country's finest—and the Ceraunian Mountains rising as a backdrop create a postcard-perfect landscape unlike anywhere else. Within the town itself, the atmosphere is wonderfully serene. Wander through the narrow, winding streets lined with exposed stone houses until you discover the ancient monasteries. Welcome to the Albanian Riviera!
History
Dhermi, part of the Himara municipality, was originally inhabited by the Epirote tribe of the Chaonians. A Greek-language school was established in the town between 1627 and 1633. The first local Albanian school opened its doors in 1632. From that point on, the town's education system continued to evolve. The local bishopric of Himara supported the establishment of new Greek schools in 1682. During the 17th century, a local benefactor sponsored the founding of the Vizilios school.
In November 1912, when Greek forces controlled the neighbouring city of Himara, armed rebels from Dhermi voiced their desire to join the movement for the region's integration with Greece.
Dhermi Today
Dhermi sits roughly forty kilometres from both Vlorë and Saranda. Composed of three quarters—old Dhermi, Kondraq or Kallam, and Gjilek—the town sprawls at 200 metres' altitude across a slope of the Ceraunian Mountains, which descend to meet the Ionian Sea all the way to the island of Corfu.
The old town of Dhermi will not disappoint. Climb to the hilltop to visit the Monastery of Saint Mary Panajia, which houses beautiful frescoed walls. Stroll along cobbled streets lined with stone houses, their silent ambiance transporting you to a timeless world. The winding, steep pathways reveal lovely vistas at every turn.
